Acceptable Use Policy

01What this covers

This Acceptable Use Policy applies to the Rescript software (the web app, the desktop applications, and the source code), to getrescript.com, and to any hosted service we operate. It is part of the Terms of Use and is incorporated into them by reference. Capitalised terms not defined here have the meaning given in the Terms.

Breaking these rules is a breach of the Terms and, where the conduct falls outside the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0, may also be a breach of your licence to the software.

02Voice regeneration and synthetic speech

Rescript's Regenerate feature clones a speaker's voice from audio in your recording and synthesizes new speech in it. The clone and the synthesis both happen on your device and no voice data reaches us — which removes our ability to see misuse, not your obligation to avoid it.

You may

• Correct or re-word your own speech in your own recordings, in your own voice.
• Regenerate another person's line where you have their informed, specific consent to do so — for example a guest who agreed that stumbles may be fixed in post.
• Produce clearly labelled synthetic audio for creative, satirical, educational, or research purposes, where the labelling is genuinely visible to the audience and the law where you are permits it.

You must not

• Impersonate a real person. Do not generate speech intended to be taken as an authentic recording of someone saying something they did not say.
• Defraud or socially engineer anyone. This includes impersonating a relative, colleague, executive, or official to obtain money, credentials, or access, and includes any attempt to defeat voice-based authentication or identity verification.
• Interfere with elections or public safety. Do not fabricate statements by candidates, officials, journalists, or emergency authorities.
• Produce sexual content in a real person's voice without that person's explicit consent. Never involving a minor, under any circumstances.
• Harass, defame, threaten, or degrade.Do not use a person's voice to abuse them or to make them appear to abuse others.
• Strip or defeat provenance. Do not remove disclosure, watermarking, or provenance information from synthetic audio, or represent synthetic audio as an unedited original where authenticity matters — evidence, journalism, compliance recordings, or legal proceedings.
• or any other use, production or alteration that is unlawful, harmful, or objectionable.

Disclosure

Where synthetic speech could reasonably be mistaken for an authentic recording, tell your audience. A line in the description or credits is usually enough for ordinary content. Some uses require more than courtesy: several jurisdictions now mandate disclosure for synthetic media, particularly in political advertising, and transparency obligations for deepfakes apply in others.

The law here is real, and it is your responsibility

A person's voice is protected in ways that vary sharply by jurisdiction and are changing quickly. Depending on where you and your subject are, a voice clone may implicate biometric privacy statutes, rights of publicity and personality, defamation and false-light claims, consumer-protection and fraud law, election law, and rules specific to synthetic media. We do not advise you on any of it, and nothing on this site is legal advice. You are responsible for confirming that what you intend to do is lawful where it will be made and where it will be seen.

03The recordings you bring

Rescript does not supply content — you bring your own file. By using it you confirm that you have the right to process that file, which normally means that you recorded it, that you own or licensed it, or that whoever does has authorised your use.

• Recording consent. Many places require the consent of some or all participants before a conversation is recorded. If a recording was made unlawfully, editing it here does not cure that.
• Confidential material. Rescript keeps your media on your device, which is often what makes it appropriate for sensitive work. That is not a substitute for whatever duty of confidence, research ethics approval, or professional obligation you are under.
• Third-party rights.Copyright, performers' rights, and contractual restrictions on the footage remain yours to observe.

04Content you must not produce

Do not use Rescript to create, edit, or prepare for distribution any material that:

• sexually exploits or endangers a child, in any form and without exception;
• is non-consensual intimate imagery, or is intended to sexually harass a real person;
• incites or facilitates violence, terrorism, or serious harm to people or animals;
• facilitates fraud, identity theft, extortion, stalking, or targeted harassment;
• infringes copyright, trade marks, or other rights you do not hold; or
• is otherwise unlawful, harmful, or objectionable where you are or where it will be seen.

05The site and hosted services

Separately from what you make with the software, do not do any of the following to getrescript.com, the hosted web app, or our API endpoints:

• probe, scan, or test for vulnerabilities without our prior written permission, or otherwise attempt to gain unauthorised access;
• send falsified, automated, or bulk data to the telemetry or signup endpoints, or otherwise pollute or inflate our metrics;
• submit an email address that is not yours, or sign anyone else up;
• interfere with availability for others, including through disproportionate automated load; or
• impersonate Rescript, or distribute modified builds in a way that suggests they are official.

Good-faith security research is welcome. Contact us at hello@getrescript.com before you test anything, and we will not pursue you for testing we agreed to.

06Licence limits

The software is licensed under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0. Personal projects, study, research, and evaluation are covered. Use in furtherance of a commercial venture is not, and needs a separate paid licence — write to hello@getrescript.com.

Do not remove or obscure copyright, licence, or attribution notices, and do not present the software as your own work or as licensed on terms other than those it carries.

07What we can and cannot enforce

We want to be straightforward about this rather than imply a supervision we do not perform. Transcription, editing, voice cloning, synthesis, and export all run on your device. Your media, your transcripts, and the voices you generate are never transmitted to us. We therefore have no ability to review, detect, or block anything you produce with the software, and no content moderation exists between you and your output.

Where we do have a relationship with you, we can and will act on credible reports of misuse. Depending on the circumstances that may mean suspending access to hosted services, removing you from our mailing list or community spaces, declining or terminating a commercial licence, terminating your rights under the Terms, or cooperating with law enforcement where we are legally required to.

08Reporting misuse

If you believe Rescript has been used against you — in particular if you believe your voice has been cloned without your consent — contact us at hello@getrescript.com. Tell us what you can about where the material appeared and how you came across it.

We will take your report seriously and respond, and we will be honest with you about the limits set out above: we do not host the output, we have no copy of it, and in most cases the practical route to removal runs through the platform hosting the material rather than through us. Where we can help — with information, with a report of our own, or by acting against an account or licence we control — we will.
