Terms of Use

01Who you are agreeing with

Rescript(“we”, “us”, “our”) is an independent open-source project. These Terms of Use are an agreement between you and the operator(s) of Rescript, reachable at hello@getrescript.com. By using getrescript.com, the hosted web app at app.getrescript.com, or any Rescript desktop application (together, the “Services”), you accept them. If you do not accept them, do not use the Services.

Contributors are not parties to this agreement. People who contribute code, translations, documentation, or issues to the Rescript repository are not offering you anything under these Terms, make you no promises, and take on no obligation or liability to you. Their contributions reach you under the software licence in the repository and nothing more.

You must be old enough to enter a binding contract where you live. The Services are not directed at children.

02What Rescript is

Rescript is a transcript-based editor for video and audio. It transcribes a file you already have, lets you cut it by deleting words, removes filler words and silences, labels speakers, can regenerate a selected line in a cloned voice, and exports the result.

Every one of those operations runs on your device — in your browser or in the desktop application — using models downloaded to your machine. Rescript is not a cloud service for processing media, we operate no infrastructure that touches your files, and there is no account required to use the editor.

The source is public at github.com/wassgha/rescript. You are encouraged to verify the statements above rather than take them on trust.

03Your licence to the software

The Rescript software is licensed under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0, which permits any use that is not for commercial advantage. Commercial use requires a separate paid licence; write to hello@getrescript.com.

That licence, not these Terms, governs your rights in the software itself. Where the two conflict on what you may do with the code, the licence prevails. These Terms govern your use of this website and of any service we host.

Rescript bundles third-party components — including speech recognition, speaker segmentation, and speech synthesis models, and ffmpeg — each under its own licence. Those licences continue to apply to those components, and some carry attribution requirements you must observe when you redistribute.

04Acceptable use

The Acceptable Use Policy forms part of these Terms. Read it — it is short, and the section on voice regeneration sets out obligations that carry real legal consequences if you ignore them.

In summary, and without limiting that policy, you must not:

• generate speech in a person's voice without their informed consent, or present synthetic speech as an authentic recording;
• use the Services to impersonate, defraud, defame, harass, or deceive anyone;
• process media you have no right to process, or produce unlawful content; or
• attack, overload, or attempt unauthorised access to our website or endpoints.

05Your media stays yours

You keep all rights in the media you edit, the transcripts produced from it, and everything you export. We acquire no licence to any of it — not because we grant you a generous exception, but because none of it is ever transmitted to us and we have nothing to license.

You are solely responsible for your media and your output: for having the right to use the source material, for the consent of the people in it, for the accuracy of what you publish, and for the consequences of distributing it. We do not review, host, moderate, back up, or retain any of it.

Projects are stored locally, in your browser's storage or in the desktop application. Clearing site data, uninstalling, or a disk failure will destroy them. Keep your own copies of anything you cannot lose.

06Email, accounts, and the mailing list

You can use the editor without an account. If you give us your email address on this website, we add it to our mailing list and send you a confirmation link, which also signs you in to getrescript.com. There is no password.

Only submit an address that is yours. You can ask us to unsubscribe you and delete your address at any time by writing to hello@getrescript.com. What we store and for how long is set out in the Privacy Policy.

We may suspend or remove access to any account or hosted service if we reasonably believe it is being used in breach of these Terms.

07Third-party services

Using the Services causes your device to contact parties other than us. In particular, machine-learning models are downloaded from Hugging Face the first time you need them, and the desktop applications check GitHub Releases for updates. Those requests reveal your IP address to those providers, and their own terms and privacy policies apply.

We do not control third-party services and are not responsible for them, for their availability, or for changes they make. If a model provider withdraws a model, the corresponding feature may stop working for new installations.

08Availability and changes

The Services are provided on a best-effort basis with no service level, no uptime commitment, and no guarantee of support. Rescript is actively developed: features may change substantially, be replaced, or be removed, and file formats or stored projects may not remain compatible between versions.

Because the editor runs locally, a version you have already downloaded keeps working whatever happens to this website. That is deliberate, and it is the strongest guarantee we can honestly offer.

09Automated output is not reliable

Rescript uses machine-learning models for transcription, speaker detection, filler and silence detection, and speech synthesis. All of them make mistakes, and some of those mistakes are confident and plausible.

• Transcripts contain errors, including words that were never spoken. Do not rely on a Rescript transcript as a record of what was said in any context where accuracy matters — legal, medical, journalistic, regulatory, or safety-related — without checking it against the audio.
• Automatic filler and silence removal will sometimes cut material you wanted. Review the result before you publish it.
• Speaker labels are inferred and can be wrong, including attributing words to the wrong person.
• Synthesized speech is an imitation. It may mispronounce words, convey unintended emphasis, or be recognisable as synthetic — and, equally, may not be.

You are responsible for reviewing output before you rely on it or distribute it.

10Disclaimer of warranties

The services and the software are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, accuracy, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the services will be uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or that any output will be accurate or suitable for your purposes.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties. Where that is the case, the exclusions above apply only to the extent permitted, and nothing in these Terms limits rights you have under mandatory consumer protection law.

11Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, media, goodwill, or business opportunity, arising out of or relating to the services, whether in contract, tort, or otherwise, and whether or not we were advised of the possibility.

12Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Rescript, its operator(s), and its contributors from any claim, demand, loss, liability, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) brought by a third party and arising out of your use of the Services, your media or output, or your breach of these Terms or of the Acceptable Use Policy.

This includes, without limitation, claims brought by a person whose voice you cloned, whose likeness or statements you altered, or whose recording you processed without the right to do so.

13Termination

You may stop using the Services at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access to this website, the hosted web app, our mailing list, or a commercial licence at any time, and will normally do so only where we reasonably believe these Terms have been breached.

Termination does not reach software already on your machine: your rights in it continue to be governed by the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0 for as long as you comply with it. Sections that by their nature should survive — disclaimers, liability limits, indemnity, and governing law — survive termination.

14Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. You and we agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in California for any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Services.

If you are a consumer resident in a jurisdiction whose law entitles you to bring proceedings locally or to the protection of mandatory rules that cannot be varied by agreement, nothing here deprives you of that.

If any provision of these Terms is held unenforceable, it is modified to the minimum extent necessary or severed, and the rest remains in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it.

15Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms as the project changes. The revised version takes effect when it is posted here, with the “last updated” date at the top adjusted. Where a change materially reduces your rights, we will make a reasonable effort to flag it — on the site, or by email if you are on our mailing list.

Continuing to use the Services after a change means you accept the revised Terms. Previous versions are visible in this site's public Git history.
